Mr James Barnes

Consultant Surgeon

Mr James Barnes is a Consultant General Surgeon with a practice focused on Transplant, Dialysis Access and Parathyroid surgery.  Mr Barnes graduated from the University of Warwick in 2007 and completed his surgical training in the West Midlands Region. He undertook a 3-year Clinical Research Fellowship in Oxford where he received further clinical training in transplantation and was awarded a DPhil from the University of Oxford for research into graft surveillance after pancreas transplantation. After completing surgical training, Mr Barnes has worked as a Consultant in Birmingham, Coventry and Oxford. All his NHS practice is now based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
Mr Barnes has sub-specialist interests in:

  • Parathyroid surgery (including more complex cases such as redo surgery, renal hyperparathyroidism, and MEN-associated hyperparathyroidism)
  • Complex vascular access surgery including arteriovenous grafts and revision surgery
  • Living donor transplantation (including laparoscopic donor nephrectomy)
  • Non-donor nephrectomy (for conditions such as polycystic kidneys, pelvic kidneys, failed kidney transplants)

Research & Publications

After completing his Senior House Officer training Mr Simon Radley undertook a period of research into colorectal cancer and submitted a thesis for which he was awarded an MD by the University of Birmingham.

He has published widely on colorectal disease and in particular functional bowel disorders. He has written several book chapters.
